Courses Completed in the Professional Social Work Program

Prior to admission to the professional program, students will have completed:

  • 1025A/B - Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare.
  • 1026A/B - Introduction to Social Work Practice and Communication Skills.
  • 2206A/B - Research Methods for Social Workers OR the former 2205.
  • 2216A/B - Introduction to Generalist Social Work Practice and Theories.

Students who have completed former social work courses (SW1021/1022; SW1020; SW2214/2215; SW2204), may book an appointment with the Social Work Programs Liaison for more information on counting these courses toward the BSW program checklist.

Only students who are formally admitted into the professional program may enrol in Social Work courses at the 3300 and 4400 level.

While in the Social Work program, students are expected to behave in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the Canadian Association of Social Workers and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, both in the academic environment and field setting.

Due to the nature of the professional Social Work program, the School has an attendance policy in place.

Year 3 Progression Requirements

To be eligible to progress to Year IV, third year students must complete all requirements for third year successfully; and obtain an overall average of at least 70% in all principal courses, a minimum mark of 60% in each course, and a "Satisfactory" in Social Work 3320Y.

Integration Seminar: Two hours every other week in first and second term

Students require 2.5 Social Work Electives at the 3000 level or above, including at least 0.5 from each of the following two categories; a maximum of 1.0 approved courses from outside of Social Work may be taken.  Consult with the School for approved list.

Category 1: Will primarily examine micro/meso levels of practice and course topics may include but are not limited to: addictions; crisis and trauma; mental health; children and adolescents; health care and social work; seniors; child welfare; human sexuality; thanatology; and disability studies.

Category 2: Will primarily examine macro levels of practice and course topics may include but are not limited to: advocacy; first nations; international and multicultural social work; social justice and peace.
