This award has been established through generous gifts from family members, friends and colleagues in memory of Mary Lou Karley, Coordinator of Field Instruction in the School of Social Work from 1999-2009, so as to perpetuate her commitment to excellence in social work practice. Awarded annually to a graduating MSW student chosen by the School, who has demonstrated qualities of leadership and commitment which promise future professional excellence. Available through the generosity of The Mary Lou Karley Memorial Fund.

In recognition of the essential role of field instruction in the education of our social work students, King's University College grants HONORARY ACADEMIC STATUS to experienced and dedicated field instructors. Successful applicants are awarded the title of ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF FIELD PRACTICE EDUCATION.

To be eligible for this designation, the field instructor/candidate must meet the following criteria:

  1. BSW, MSW and/or RSW. A related university degree will be considered.
  2. At least 3 out of the last 6 years experience as a field instructor with King's University College.
  3. Evidence of post-degree professional development in social work practice, policy, research or administration.
  4. Evidence of participation in field instruction training sessions, and Social Work Professional Development Days.
  5. Positive evaluation of the candidates field instruction by students.
  6. Involvement in field instruction over the past 2 years. (Exceptions to this requirement might be made if the candidate was actively involved in other duties contributing to field instruction, such as coordination of student placements over a period of at least three years.
  7. Current CV or resume.

Eligible candidates can APPLY in writing for this status. Candidates who have a consecutive history of Field Instruction or involvement in supporting and coordinating placements in their agency over five years are invited to apply. Applications, accompanied by a CV and any other supporting documentation, should be submitted. Successful applicants will receive their award at the Fall Field Appreciation Reception.

This is an annual award which is given to a field instructor with King's University College, School of Social Work. The individual will have shown competence and excellence in field instruction. They will also have demonstrated qualities of leadership and a commitment to social work education and practice.

Nominations, in writing, will be accepted from social work faculty, agency field placement coordinators/directors, and third and fourth year BSW students. The written submission should outline the reasons for the nomination and are to be forwarded by AUGUST 1 to Sarah Morrison, Field Education Administrative Assistant (sarah.morrison@kings.uwo.ca).

The selection criteria include:

  • Sensitivity to the learning and emotional needs of social work students
  • Ability to create a supportive learning environment
  • Openness to recognize and encourage the students' skill development and ideas
  • Ability to evaluate the student's performance in an open, ongoing and creative fashion
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach the integration of theory and practice
  • Dedication to promoting social work as a profession
  • BSW or MSW or equivalent

An annual award is presented to a MSW Field Instructor with the School of Social Work at King's University College who has demonstrated competence and excellence in field instruction, qualities of leadership, and commitment to social work education and practice

Selection Criteria:

  1. sensitivity to the learning and emotional needs of social work interns
  2. ability to create a supportive learning environment
  3. openness to recognize and encourage the intern's skill development and ideas
  4. ability to evaluate the intern's performance in an open, ongoing and creative fashion
  5. ability to demonstrate and teach the integration of theory and practice at an advanced level
  6. a commitment to promoting social work as a profession that incorporates evidence based practice and critical inquiry
  7. a Field Instructor approved by the School of Social Work, King's University College

Nominations, in writing, will be accepted from social work faculty, agency field placement coordinators/directors, and MSW students completing practicum. The written submission should outline the reasons for the nomination.
