Academic Requirements for Admission

1-Year MSW
  • A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an accredited university
  • At least a 70% average in the last two full-time years, or part-time equivalent
  • Completion of a Research Methods course
  • 1000+ hours of paid or unpaid work in the human services is required
2-Year MSW
  • A 4-year Bachelor degree
  • Minimum 70% average in the last two full-time years, or part-time equivalent
  • Completion of a Research Methods course
  • 1000+ hours of paid or unpaid work in the human services is required

Non-Academic Requirements for Admission

A. References

Applicants must provide 2 non-academic references from work, volunteer, or professional sources.
References will be contacted once you have added their contact information to your application.

B. Resumé and experiences summary

The School of Social Work is interested in the experiences of candidates including:

  • educational qualifications
  • practice, employment & volunteer experience
  • membership in professional associations
  • supervisory experience
  • experiences summary chart
  • additional skills, attributes or other information

D. OPTIONAL

For applicants wishing to apply under Indigenous or French Speaking status or members of traditionally marginalized groups. This form is optional and does not guarantee the applicant a spot in the program. Additional Considerations Form

 

International Applicants

  • Applicants who obtained their Bachelor of Social Work from another country must provide confirmation from the Canadian Association of Social Work that their degree has been assessed as equivalent https://www.casw-acts.ca/en/what-we-do/assessment-international-credentials
  • Proof of English Proficiency as noted in the MSW Admissions Guide. Note: The School's requirements exceed those of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies general requirements
  • World Education Services (WES) It is highly recommended for applicants who have completed their 4-year degree in another country, to have their degree assessed by WES to determine if it is equivalent to a 4-year degree in Canada. https://www.wes.org/ca
  • Official Proof of Proficiency in English - Applicants whose first language is not English must furnish evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language by a satisfactory achievement within the last two years. The Master of Social Work degree is offered through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at Western University and all courses are offered by the School of Social Work at King's University College.

It is each applicant’s responsibility to be familiar with the requirements for admission, progression and graduation, as set out by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at Western.  In any instance where there is a discrepancy between this Handbook and the Western Calendar, the Western Calendar will be considered the official calendar copy.

Drop-In Hours

Tosha, the Programs Liaison, has drop-in hours for students interested in the MSW Program and she is available Monday afternoons from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm unless otherwise noted.
